Advisory System

HLA faculty members touch the students’ lives in many different ways, from teaching to counseling, and being an essential part of student interactions as advisors.
Horizon faculty members touch the students’ lives in many different ways, from teaching to counseling, and being an essential part of student interactions as advisors.

Advisory system at Horizon matches small groups of students to an advisor. The advisor performs a bridging role in the student’s life. They happen to be in the center of the communications between faculty and students, home and school, leading students on a healthy path toward college and life.

At Horizon, advisory groups are structured based on grade levels. Each grade is divided into two or more small groups. Every small group is assigned to an advisor.

Advisor Role

The advisor meets with the students weekly in a group setting, and meet with them one-on-one setting in to set their goals and learn more about their interests. During those meetings, advisors will have the opportunity to get to know the students closely. With this information, advisors will be able to guide students based on their needs and interests. During these meetings, advisors will go over students’ academic and behavioral records and social and emotional standing and discuss any concerns that the students might have. Advisors will be a bridge between students and the faculty, and the home. One of the important aspects of being a bridge is to follow up on the short and long-term goals decided through the individual meetings. Advisors are in close contact with counselors.

Advisory Activities

Advisors will organize inside and outside the school activities with their advisory groups. Some of the activities are organized class-wide, and some are organized in smaller groups, allowing advisors and students to get to know each other better.

Parent Communication

Each year, advisors will get together with the parents. One at the beginning of the year and one towards the end of the year. After one on one meetings, if needed, advisors will communicate with the parents in person or by phone.
